A party game for Zoom, Teams and Discord

Punchy works over any video call. The host shares the game screen, and everyone joins from their own phone or a second browser window, wherever they are.

How to play over a video call

  1. 1

    Start a game

The host opens punchy.wtf on a computer and starts a game. That window is the big screen.

  2. 2

    Share that window

Share the browser window or tab in your call. Turn on sound sharing if your app offers it, so everyone hears the music and effects.

  3. 3

    Everyone joins

Players scan the QR code on the shared screen, or go to punchy.wtf and type the 4-letter room code. A phone or a second browser window both work.

Sharing tips by app

🎥

Zoom

Click Share Screen, pick the browser window, and tick "Share sound" before you share.

💼

Microsoft Teams

Click Share, pick the window, and turn on "Include sound".

🟢

Google Meet

Choose Present, then "A tab", pick the Punchy tab, and keep "Also share tab audio" on.

🎮

Discord

Use Share Your Screen in a voice channel and pick the browser window. Sound sharing depends on your system.

Menus change between versions. If you can't find the sound option, the game works fine without it.

What we tested

  • The QR code on the shared screen still scans at 720p, 480p and 360p video quality with heavy compression.
  • The room code stays readable at 360p, so players can type it in instead.
  • The player page works in a normal desktop browser window, not only on phones.
  • Players connect over the internet, so they don't need to be on the same network.

Questions

Does everyone need to be in the same place?

No. Punchy runs on the internet, so players can join from anywhere, on any network.

Can someone play without a smartphone?

Yes. Open punchy.wtf in a second browser window on the computer and enter the room code. The player page works in any browser.

Will the video delay be a problem?

No. Everyone writes and votes on their own device, and every step gives you 25 to 80 seconds, so a couple of seconds of video delay doesn't matter.

Do we need to install anything?

No. Punchy runs in the browser, and there's no account to create. You only need the video call app you already use.

How many people can play?

3 to 8 players, plus an audience of up to 100 who vote along.

What you need

  • A video call where the host can share their screen
  • A phone or a browser window for each player
  • At least 3 people who think they're funny
